The Miami Dolphins were started in 1966 as an expansion team to the American Football League as South Florida's premier franchise. The Dolphins hired legendary coach Don Shula who was formerly of the Baltimore Colts. Shula would coach the Dolphins the for the next 26 years and under his reign, the Dolphins would win two Super Bowl Championships and be the only team to ever go undefeated.
After the merger in 1970, the Miami Dolphins were the set with a star studded lineup for one of the most historic runs in NFL history. With quarterback Bob Griese, running back Larry Csonka, and the legendary "No Name Defense, the Dolphins were the first AFL team to win back to back Super Bowl Championships. This fact is often overshadowed by the 1972 Dolphins, which was the only football team to make it through a season going undefeated.
When the 1980's rolled around, the Dolphins smartly chose a young quarterback named Dan Marino in 1983. This Pittsburgh Panther product would become the face of the franchise for the next fifteen years. However, though Marino set most of the league's passing records during his career, the Dolphins would only make it to one Super Bowl under him in his rookie year in 1983. Though they were always in the hunt, Marino would never get another chance to win the big game.
