Philadelphia Eagles History

While the Eagles have not won a Super Bowl, they have won numerous NFL championships. IN 1948, 1949, and 1960, the Eagles were able to lay claim to the best in the league. They are to date the only NFL team to ever win two championships in a row by shutting out their opponent.

Even though the teams in the 40's were very impressive, the 1960 was truly something special. This Eagles team was centered around talent like Tommy McDonald and Chuck Bednarik. They were the only team ever to best Green Bay head coach Vince Lombardi in playoff football. However, the Eagles would go back into a dark period lasting almost two decades following this championship.

Dick Vermeil's time as head coach began in 1976 when the Eagles hired him away from UCLA. Vermeil rebuilt the team from the ground up and got them to their first Super Bowl in 1981. They ultimately lost to the underdog Raiders that year and three years later, Vermeil burned himself out working too hard and had to resign. After Vermeil, the next time the Eagles would be great was under Buddy Ryan, and then Andy Reid.

Ryan and Reid were coaches hired to stop the losing stigma that their predecessors had built up in the organization. Ryan came on board following his Super Bowl championship in 1986 as the Bears defensive coordinator and built one of the greatest defenses in league history. In 1999, the Eagles hired Andy Reid, after the Kotite and Rhodes eras had ended, and he rebuilt the offense of the Eagles. Teamed up with mastermind defensive coordinator, Jimmie Johnson, Reid's Eagles would go to their second Super Bowl in 2004 but lose again, this time to the New England Patriots.

Other Philadelphia Teams

There are three other major sports teams located in South Philadelphia with one of the most impressive collections of sports facilities in the country. The Wells Fargo Center houses two of these teams and they are the Flyers and the 76ers. The 76ers are the city's pro basketball team and they have had a wide range of success and failure throughout their history. The Flyers are the NHL team that plays in the same building and recently made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers won their Cups in the 1970's under Captain Bobby Clarke.

The Phillies are the Major League Baseball team that plays across the street from the Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have been the most successful team in the city in recent years, having made back-to-back World Series appearances in 2008 and 2009.
