New York Giants History

One of the oldest teams in the NFL, the New York Football Giants, as they are often called, were founded in 1925 but played their first game in Connecticut. The football part of their name came as a way to differentiate them from the baseball club, the New York Giants, based in the city before moving to San Francisco in 1958. The Giants would become an immediate success in the league and were a team fundamental in making professional football what it is today.

Throughout their early history, the Giants won four NFL championships in 1927, 1934, 1938, and again in 1956. Popular players of the early era in Giants history were Frank Gifford, who became the face of the league, Roosevelt Brown, and Sam Huff. The Giants also were instrumental in the popularization of the NFL when they lost the only championship overtime game to the Baltimore Colts at Yankee Stadium in 1958. One of the most popular pictures of the era was taken at this game.

After the merger, the Giants would be at the bottom of the scope as the Dallas Cowboys proved to be the dominant team during the 1970's and the early part of the 1980's. However, great head coach, Bill Parcells, lead this team to the first of their three Super Bowl championships in 1986. The Giants would win again in 1990 when the Bills blew a 47 field goal which could have won them the game.

After this season, the Giant would go on to play in two more Super Bowls, losing one in grand fashion to the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 but winning the other in 2007 against the New England Patriots. Not only did they win the Super Bowl that year, but the Giants also put an end to the undefeated streak the Patriots were on. This Super Bowl marked the crowning achievement to the career of Giant great, Michael Strahan.

Other New York Teams

New York City is one of the largest cities in the World and as such has a plethora of pro sports teams located within the city limits. Some teams that are affiliated with this town also play outside the city but are considered property of the New York sports. The other football team that calls this city home is the New York Jets. The Jets share a stadium with the Giants and have been steadily improving under head coach Rex Ryan. The Knicks are the city's pro basketball team and are the only basketball team in the city.

Baseball has been the major contributor to New York City's sports legacy as the Yankees have won a total of 27 World Series. The Mets also play in the Borough of Queens in New York and recently moved into their new stadium. The Islanders and the Rangers are both NHL teams that call this city home, but they do not share an arena. The Rangers play their games in Madison Square Garden while the Islanders play at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
