Other Cincinnati Teams
In Cincinnati, Ohio, there are only two major pro sports teams found within the city limits, the Bengals and the Reds. The Reds are a baseball franchise that is the oldest professional sports club in the United States. They can trace their organizations origins all the way back to 1869, the year they were founded. The Reds have been one of the most storied baseball franchises in the National League as the "Big Red Machine" dominated this league in the early stages of the 1970's.
While the Reds and the Bengals are the only professional shows in town, the world of college sports is huge in Ohio. Ohio is traditionally a football state as many great players have come from high school programs from this area like Chris Carter, Chris Spielman, and Desmond Howard. In Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati has been slowly gaining recognition away from big brother Ohio State University and reached its first BCS Bowl game after the 2009 season.

Cincinnati Bengals History
The Bengals became a part of the AFL against the will of Paul Brown, their owner, in 1968 because he originally wanted his team to play in the NFL. However, because he was assured that the merger would take place in 1970, the Bengals were created and attached to the AFL and would later become an original member of the AFC conference in the newly formed National Football League.
For much of their history, the Bengals were known as "the Bungles." This nickname was bestowed upon them because they were regularly at the bottom of the AFC standings. Part of the reason for this is that they were an expansion team, so it took time to build a core of solid players and they had many of their drafted players flop. The most famous of which was Akili Smith, a quarterback picked in 1999.
However, though the Bengals have had many years at the bottom of the heap, they have also had a few successful seasons. They have played in two Super Bowls in the 1980's and have won their perspective division a total of seven times. Though they have yet to win a Super Bowl, the Bengals have improved to the best they have ever been since the turn of the millennium. By adding superstars like Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, Cedric Benson, and Keith Rivers, the Bengals have come into their own as a franchise over the past six seasons.
