Take about half an hour's drive to Arlington and you can visit Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, which is home to the Texas Rangers baseball team. While you're in Arlington, drop by Cowboys Stadium and see "America's Team", The five time Super Bowl winning Dallas Cowboys as they play furious gridiron action. Of course, if you don't want to leave the city of Dallas, you can always visit the Dallas Vigilantes, the Arena Football League. Mavericks History
The Dallas Mavericks were a team that were brought to the Big "D" in 1980 by Don Carter and Norm Sonju. Almost immediately, the team started out with energy and force. The Western Conference was very highly competitive, yet the Mavericks were constantly making the playoffs and with names like Mark Aguirre, Brad Davis and Rolondo Blackman, it was easy to see why. The Mavericks made the playoffs six times in seven years between 1984 and 1990, however, they never made it further than the conference finals because the Lakers were so dominant.
In the '90s, the Mavericks went through the "Dark Ages", bottoming out at 11-71, only two wins better than the dreaded 9-73 that the Philadelphia 76ers had in 1973, but the team rebounded at the start of the 21st Century with help from Dallas's "Big Three" consisting of Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash. Some thought the glory would be short lived as Nash was traded to the Suns in 2004, but with Nowitzki at the helm, the Mavericks made it to the NBA finals for the first time in 2006. In 2010 they were looking strong as ever, with former player Jason Kidd having returned to the Mavericks.
* = the Dallas Mavericks tied for first place in the division in 2003. However, the San Antonio Spurs had a better record against the Mavericks and won the title.
