For the first few years of their existence, the Cleveland Browns were actually members of a lesser known football league, the AAFC, the All American Football Conference. When this league dissolved in 1949, the NFL took three of its team and rolled them over into their league. These teams included the Colts, the 49ers, and the Cleveland Browns. When the Browns changed leagues, they hit the ground running by defeating the defending NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles. It only took the Browns one season to win their first NFL championship.

In 1957, the Browns were able to obtain one of the greatest, if not the greatest running back in the history of the NFL named Jim Brown. Brown was from Syracuse University and was slighted from getting the Heisman Trophy because of the color of his skin. He would later go on to become the NFL's all time leading rusher that would eventually be broken by Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. However, Jim Brown still holds the all time yards per carry record.

The Browns have had many rivals over the years, but their main rival has to be considered to be the Denver Broncos. When the Browns and Broncos met in the playoffs during the 1980's, some of the greatest football games ever took place. One of these games featured the famous drive, when John Elway took his team down to score with about a minute left on the clock.
