The Carolina Panthers were inaugurated into the National Football League as the 29th team in league history. The Panthers came into prominence when they built a team that won its first NFC Championship in 2003 by besting the Philadelphia Eagles. With star players like wide receiver Steve Smith and defensive end Julius Peppers, the Panthers played in a close Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. They would lose this game by three points, but gave what would become a Patriots dynasty everything that they could handle.
