Billy Joel was reluctant to begin playing the piano as a child, but he did it to please his parents, who wanted him to follow in the footsteps of his classical pianist father. At that point, he decided that , since Columbia University was not an option, he would simply have to set his sights on Columbia Records, and the label signed him in 1973.

Over the course of his impressive career, Billy Joel has performed several history making concerts, the most famous of which were his Russia shows in 1987. Joel knows his world history and he was well aware that these shows would make him one of the first American acts to play Russia since the construction of the Berlin Wall. He played three shows in Moscow and three shows in Leningrad, which were combined to create his classic live Russia album. He played many of his own hit songs in addition to "Back In the USSR" by The Beatles and "The Times They Are A'Changing" by Bob Dylan.

After struggling with personal issues for many years, Billy Joel considered going into retirement. On New Year's Eve in 1999, he played Madison Square Garden and claimed that the show would be his last. He sat at the piano, banging out his greatest hits, for an incredible four hours. The concert was later released as an album entitled 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert.
