The Sharks were formed in 1991 and immediately were considered a dark horse team. When they made the playoffs a scant three years later, no one would expect they toppled the Red Wings, the same year they introduced a tradition at the Pavilion where a 17 foot shark mouth would lower from the rafters while the eyes would flash red and fog would pour out of its mouth. Also, heavy metal fanatics were very happy to hear "Seek and Destroy" become the Sharks theme song before every game. Although the Sharks struck early in their career, they wouldn't become serious Cup contenders until 2000 when they started performing magnificently at the HP Pavilion Center, having won the Division Title 5 times in the next ten years.
The HP Pavilion Center in San Jose is also known as the "Shark Tank", and it's a masterpiece among arenas. This 450,000 square foot arena used over 33,000 cubic yards of concrete built on 1,800 tons of steel. It also used 353 miles of electrical wiring to wire both the lighting and the dozens of televisions that adorn the concourse, the restaurants and the Bank Club. Whether you're getting food, have to use the restroom or are just trying to find your seat, you'll never miss a second of the action!
