They have trials and tribulations between the two as they interact with the later stars of the Wizard of Oz. These two are actually shown to be friends as Elphaba is portrayed as just getting a bad reputation. The Wizard of Oz is actually shown to be the bad guy in this play and is actually forced to leave Oz rather than merely leaving of his accord. This play also features an alternate ending where the Wicked Witch of the West actually survives and was hiding as her boyfriend, the scarecrow, meets her when she pops out of a trap door at the end.

This production was first enacted in 2003 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. Later, this play made it Broadway premier in New York City at the Gershwin Theatre in October of the same year. This musical packed a star studded cast with award winners in Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenowith, and Joel Grey. The retelling of the story of Oz from a different perspective is what draws audiences in the door, but the phenomenal acting, singing, and dance are what have made this play an instant hit across the theatrical world.

Finding a good prequel that takes a different tangent on popular pieces of culture is extremely difficult but Wicked definitely does a good job.
