Kansas City Chiefs History

Lamar Hunt was the original owner of the Chiefs organization and was instrumental in getting the American Football League started in 1959. This organization would play its first 3 seasons in Dallas before being moved to Kansas City and getting renamed the Chiefs. The Chiefs have been a revolutionary style team since they were founded due to their aggressive defenses and their spread out offense.

Hank Stram was chosen as the first football coach for this team and his ideas of the spread out passing attack made the Chiefs one of the most exciting football teams in the AFL. Stram would aid the Chiefs in winning three AFL Championship titles along with their only Super Bowl victory in 1969. However, after the 1971 season, the Chiefs would have to wait until the 1990's before becoming a relevant team again.

When the 1990's rolled around, the Chiefs hired coach Marty Schottenheimer made this franchise much better by adding a wide range of talent through the draft. Names like Elvis Grbac, Derrick Thomas, Tony Gonzalez, and Neil Smith were instrumental in the Chiefs making the playoffs for six straight seasons. However, they would stumble in the playoffs each year and fail to get back to the Super Bowl before this successful period ended at the turn of the millennium.

The Negro League team, the Monarchs, were a baseball team based here and they had great players like Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson come through this organization. Robinson would later be the first black player to play in Major League Baseball.
