In 1918, the Blueshirts team won the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season headed by Corb Denneny and Coach Dick Carroll. The team would win again in 1922, but would be up for sale and be sold to a group headed by Conn Smythe in 1927.
In the 1930's and 1940's, the Maple Leafs, under Smythe, were one of the most dominant NHL teams in league history. Though they would only win one cup during the decade of the 1930's, they would get there almost every year. It was in the 1940's, though, that the Maple Leafs were a dynasty, as they won the Cup six times between 1942 and 1951. Frank McCool, Don Metz and Syl Apps helped lead the charge for these teams as the Maple Leafs became the premier franchise in hockey.
The 1960's was the last time the Maple Leafs reached this kind of plateau of dominance as they would take home the Stanley cup four times in the decade. They did this with the help of players like Red Kelly, Tim Horton, Frank Mahovlich, and Dave Keon. Though they have remained one of the premier teams in hockey, they have yes to win an Eastern Conference title. However, this has not dissuaded the Maple Leaf faithful from filling their arena each season as they are still the most lucrative team in the NHL.
