Did you know:

The Montreal Canadiens are actually older than the NHL? The official "National Hockey League" operated its first season as known in 1917.

Even though the Bell Center is considerably smaller than most modern arenas, it has the highest seating capacity of any team in the NHL and the highest average attendance?

All announcements of goals, penalties, etc. made at Canadiens games are made in both English and French? This is because Montreal's native language is French, so they want to make sure that both teams and al the fans understand what is happening.

The Montreal Canadiens were in the 1919 Stanley Cup Finals against the Seattle Metropolitans? This series is memorable for having no winner due to a Spanish Flu pandemic that killed defenseman Joe Hall.

The Montreal Forum, where the Canadiens played for 70 years, is considered the most storied building in hockey history. It finally closed in 1996 and the Canadiens were moved to the Bell Center.

Other Montreal Teams

Montreal, surprisingly, isn't all about hockey. Even though no professional baseball or basketball teams reside in the city, there is a Canadian Football team called the Montreal Allouettes, that play at the Molson Stadium. Remember: Canadian Football is 110 yards, or 1/16th of a mile, instead of 100 yards. For those of you who like soccer, check out a game of the Montreal Impact, who play at the Saputo Stadium. In 2012, Montreal will be awarded a Major League Soccer team, so watch for them to replace the Impact.

Canadiens History

The Montreal Canadiens have a history that is as expansive as the National Hockey League themselves, and a team that has managed to survive fire, the flu, three cancelled leagues and severe financial difficulties just in their first 25 years of operations. Playing their first game in 1910, the Canadian Hockey Association was the first home to the Canadiens, however, the league folded after just two weeks, and the National Hockey Association absorbed the team along with the Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Shamrocks and restarted the season. The team was then bought out by George Kennedy and the Club Athletique Canadiens. However, a fire in January 1916 that destroyed the arena rendered the CAC insolvent and the NHA dissolved when several disputes arose between all the other teams and an owner named Eddie Livingstone who owned the Toronto Blueshirts. The franchise figured it was easier to create a new league and they created the National Hockey League and excluded Livingstone's franchise from the new organization, leaving him with the only team in the NHA, and it also became insolvent.

The franchise would continue, even when their arena burned down again in 1918, and even when most of the players were struck with the Spanish Flu in 1919, the Canadiens and their love of hockey survived. In 1926, they moved to the Montreal Forum and played there for seven decades, until 1996 when they were finally moved to the Bell Center.

The Bell Center is a C$270 million arena. Even though it is only 168,778 square feet, it seats the most number of people in all the arenas in the NHL, with 21,273 people that can be seated, and four fantastic restaurants, including the world renowned La Cage Aux Sports, and members of Club Desjardins can take in fantastic dining at Club 9-4-10. It also is home to the largest scoreboard in the NHL, a Daktronics Scoreboard that was built in 2008. Whether you're into old school hockey and tradition or want to see the most technologically advanced systems in the world, the Bell Center is a tremendous place to visit and a one-of-a-kind experience.
