Pittsburgh Steelers History
The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded in 1933 along with another Pennsylvania franchise, the Philadelphia Eagles. They Steelers did not fare well for the first three decades in the league as they would only make it to the playoffs once during this period. However, looking at the Steelers history, fans can break down the successful years into three categories, the Chuck Noll years, the Bill Cohwer years, and the Mike Tomlin years.
Chuck Noll was the coach responsible for turning the Steelers into what they are today. Noll was instrumental in building this franchise because he drafted some of the best talent in the draft and put together a team that would go on to win four Super Bowls. They did so on the shoulders of Hall of Famers like Jack Lambert, Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, and Franco Harris.
Once the Noll era ended, Bill Cohwer was hired to replace him in 1992. Cowher aided in keeping the Steeler reputation of being an ultra competitive team in the AFC. The Steelers would be led on the field by running back Jerome Bettis during these years as well that would ultimately land this organization its fifth Super Bowl title in 2005.
Mike Tomlin took over for Cowher in 2006 and has since added his own Super Bowl championship to the Steelers trophy case. Using Cowher's team and adding his own players and flare, Tomlin was able to keep the winning tradition going by beating the Cardinals in one of the most dramatic Super Bowls in history. This was the organizations sixth title making them the team with the most Super Bowl championships.
Other Pittsburgh Teams
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to three major professional sports teams. Other than the Steelers, this city hosts both the Pirates and the Penguins. These teams have won their share of championships for this town throughout their histories. The Pirates have been the only team to really fall off the map as of recently but they were instrumental in the integration of the Major Leagues by having Roberto Clemente as a Latino star for their franchise.
The Penguins are one of the best hockey clubs in all of the NHL as former star player, Mario Lemieux has saved this organization from having to move. After his time on top of the league, Lemieux has been instrumental in bringing in some of the best talent in the National Hockey League to Pittsburgh, which resulted in a Stanley Cup victory in 2009. Sidney Crosby, Euvgeni Malkin, the Staal brothers, and Marc-Andre Fleury constitute the young base of star power for this franchise.
