Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the newest football stadiums to be built and like most new football fields, features a retractable roof. The NFL combine is held here because of Indiana's location as being the middle ground all franchises. However, people should purchase Colt's tickets because this team has been one of the most dominant teams in the NFL over the past decade.
Indianapolis Colts History
Baltimore, not Indianapolis, is where the Colts organization was founded in 1953. This franchise has been rooted in success from their outset as when they joined the NFL, they only took a few years to become a dominant team. This was because they drafted the prototypical quarterback, Johnny Unitas who revolutionized the quarterback position by becoming the first pure passer in the NFL.
Because of Johnny Unitas and other Colts greats like John Mackey and Alan Ameche, this organization was instrumental in bringing fans to the sport with the legendary 1958 NFL championship game held in Yankee Stadium. The Colts won this game in the only overtime game played in a championship game in NFL history. Later, the Colts would again play in one of the most famous Super Bowls as the New York Jets upset them in Super Bowl III, making the Jets the first AFL/AFC team to win the Super Bowl.
After the Unitas era, the next golden age for the Colts was when they drafted another sensational quarterback from the University of Tennessee named Peyton Manning. Manning has become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time during his career and has helped the Colts win their first Super Bowl since 1970. Other notable players of this era were Joseph Addai, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Dwight Freeney, and Gary Brackett.
Other Indianapolis Teams
The Indiana Pacers are the only other professional sports franchise located in the city of Indianapolis besides the Colts. The Pacers are a team with a very fervent following as such NBA greats as Reggie Miller, one of the greatest three point shooters in NBA history, and Rick Smits have played for them. Since these players have rotated out of the organization, they have been in the middle of the pack of the NBA, but are definitely due for a resurgence in years to come.
Indianapolis is also home to one of the biggest motor sports events each years as the Indianapolis 500 is held at the local racetrack every season. Indiana itself is also a large football state as the two major college football programs, Notre Dame and Purdue are both located in this state. Of the two, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame is located in South Bend, Indiana and has had the most success in college football. Look for this team to get back to national prominence with their new coach, Brian Kelly, in the upcoming seasons.
