The Pistons got the nickname of "Bad Boys" in the 1980s because they adopted a very physical and defense oriented game?

When the Silverdome collapsed in 1985, the Pistons played 15 games at Joe Louis Arena?

The cheerleading squad is called "Automotion"?

The name "Pistons" was chosen because Fred Zollner was a successful piston manufacturer? The name was kept when the team moved to Detroit to represent the auto industry.

Pistons History

The Detroit Pistons started off in the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1941 and even though they were perennial favorites, the city was too small to keep them, and scandal erupted when in 1954 and 1955, several players were believed to have conspired with gamblers to shave points and fix games. The team moved two years later to Detroit and for the first 20 years of their existance, had strong players but weak teams. The players literally were big names but the team itself was unable to put anything together, and it showed well into the '80s with horrid records of 16-66 in 1979-80, and 21-61 in 1980-81. That's when Detroit decided to turn things around, by signing names like Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman and John Salley, the team began to get physical during the 1987 season and took their first two championships by force. As the team entered the 21st Century, it looked like they were going to return to glory, even winning another title in 2004, but once coach Flip Saunders left, the team went back into rebuilding mode, even breaking their sellout streak of 259 that started in 2004, but the team looks to bounce back from its doldrums and be better than ever.
